How Green are we?

IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN

Being ethically minded doesn’t just mean being self sufficient, its all about supporting other eco businesses too.

Frog Hollow Catering – does its best for the planet in the following ways:

Recycling - Reusing – Reducing

Plastic – unfortunately some plastics like polystyrene and yoghurt pots cannot be recycled yet in the UK  - so we re use them for storage as much as possible instead. A company called Green Star are planning a facility to recycle other plastics in 2013 – we look forward to that.

Paper – We re use scrap paper by making it into note pads.

Glass – We re use glass jars for chutney, jams and pickles and give as gifts at christmas.

Tins, cartons, catalogues, yellow pages, phone book, cardboard etc – all recycled locally.

We use material shopping bags, or the strong plastic bags for life, we try to avoid plastic bags in the food shops, especially the little ones in the fruit and veg aisle, we just take our own box.

We have designed our own organic cotton shopper – which you may see in use when out shopping.

We discourage the use of disposable cutlery and plates.

We use locally produced food ingredients – which is miles better!!, saves on transport, creates local jobs and encourages local businesses.

We use our local vegetable shop – Roots, Shoots and Fruits here in Westbourne for a weekly vegetable box, a lovely surprise each week and a chance to try something new.

We choose products with the least packaging or with packaging that can be recycled.

Energy Efficient Office and Kitchen:

Light bulbs – we use energy efficient ones – which last for years.

Installed an energy monitor – we can see exactly what each appliance is using.

Turn off standby switches on monitor and printer. Unplugging telephone charger after battery is full. Shutting down pc at end of day. Using rechargeable batteries. Separate recycling bin for paper and card.

Instant hot water maker – so only heating the exact amount of water required each time.

Only use the washing machine when it is full. Line dry clothes.

Buy energy efficient electricals with preferably an A rating.

Energy Efficient Transport:

Check tyre pressure regularly, switch off engine at level crossings or if stationary for more than 3 minutes, try not to carry unnecessary clutter in the boot, planning journeys with a sat nav – taking the shortest route possible, we try to group lots of little trips into one big trip if time allows.

Kind to the Environment:

Use of eco friendly cleaning products.

We use seasonal food ingredients – Which is healthier, tastes better, and cultivation has minimum effect on the environment.

A familiar frog song:

It’s not that easy being green;
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold…
or something much more colorful like that.

It’s not easy being green.
It seems you blend in with so many other ord’nary things.
And people tend to pass you over ’cause you’re
not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water
or stars in the sky.

But green’s the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like an ocean, or important like a mountain,
or tall like a tree.

When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why?
Wonder, I am green and it’ll do fine, it’s beautiful!
And I think it’s what I want to be.
